Week 8: October 3-7 Biosecurity

Goal: To analyze the role and importance of biosecurity in animal agriculture.

Description: Biosecurity is an essential step in ensuring animal health and providing a safe food supply to consumers. This lesson defines biosecurity and examines how biosecurity is enforced on a national level as well as the risks which animal operations face and management practices which are put in place to mitigate these risks.

Objectives:

1. To define biosecurity.

2. To analyze the role of biosecurity in animal agriculture in the United States.

3. To identify biosecurity risks.

4. To discover biosecurity management practices.

Week 7: 9/26 – 9/30 Digestive System Comparisons

Goal: To understand the basic anatomy of digestive systems.

Description: Take a visual, introductory journey through the digestive system. Using a variety of special effects, endoscopic video of organs inside a living organism, three-dimensional graphics and specimens of dissected organs, experts of human anatomy, animal science, muscle biology and comparative anatomy use more than a century of combined experience to give an understanding of what makes higher level organisms function. This program offers a comparative view of the organ system elements of different animal species and classes, including fish, poultry, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and humans, offering a wider perspective and a more thorough understanding of the structures and functions within these systems.

Objectives:

1. To understand basic functions of organs in the digestive systems.

2. To understand the different types of digestive systems. 3.

To identify basic structures associated with the digestive tract.

Week 6 -September 19 – 23 Intro to Digestive Systems

Goal: To understand the basic anatomy of digestive systems.

Animal Welfare

Goal: To understand animal welfare and explain how to handle the issues and concerns resulting from animal welfare.

Description: Frank Garry, D.V.M., Professor of the Department of Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University discusses animal welfare and offers insight about handling animal welfare issues or concerns.

Objectives:

1. To learn what animal welfare is and how to handle the issues and concerns.

2. To understand the cause and effect of animal welfare.

Week of August 29th

The Livestock Industry

Goal: To gain a better understanding of the history and practices of the livestock industry as well as how it has evolved over the years.

Description: This presentation includes the history of the livestock industry and the origins of various livestock species. Advancements in the livestock industry are also discussed, along with a detailed explanation of animal husbandry practices of today. Various pricing and marketing strategies are introduced, emphasizing the importance of consumer appeal and satisfaction. From animal byproducts to pricing grids and career opportunities.

Objectives:

1. To analyze the growth and development of the livestock industry as a global commodity.

2. To examine the stages of animal growth and relate it to market readiness.

3. To evaluate marketing practices for livestock, meat and meat products.

4. To explore career development and entrepreneurship opportunities.

August 22-26 Global Livestock Production

Goal: To understand the global influence of the factors impacting the demand in livestock products.

Description: This lesson describes factors responsible for increasing the demand of livestock products globally as well as those related to global commodity markets. The resources used for livestock production are identified along with the economic impacts of trade.

Objectives:

1. To identify the factors responsible for increasing the demand of livestock products.

2. To recognize the resources used for livestock production.

3. To understand the various components of trade and the economic components of trade relationships.

4. To determine the components related to the growth of global livestock commodity markets.
